Sand timers

1
This morning we were learning how to tell time.
We made sand timers using plastic bottles joined
together and filled with sand.
We were learning how many seconds there were in one minute.
Emma

2
First we got two small plastic bottles and we filled one of them with sand form the sandpit which Mrs Shepheard had dried overnight.
Next some people had to cut into one of their lids so that the sand would come through. We had to make sure the hole wasn't too big so the sand came through too quickly.
Marcial

3
Then we tested it so it was the same time as the real timer. Then we put some masking tape around so the bottles can stick together and the sand wouldn't come out. Then they were finished.
Sharon

4
One challenge was sticking them together.
The hardest challenge was to get the timers as close to one minute as possible. Mine ended up being one minute and twenty seconds. Mine is the longest in the class. Some were 30 seconds and Emma's was 13 seconds.
Angus

5
We tested mine and found it was too fast so we used a top with a smaller hole. Then we had to take some sand out because it was too slow. Then we taped it together and it ended up right on one minute.

Swimming Carnival

Here are a few recounts of the Swimming Carnival. I was impressed by the wonderful use of descriptive language.

Rose
When our teacher opened the blue coral gate we went in. When it was my turn I got butterflies in my tummy. We sat on the bumpy white edge. When I got in the water it felt like a long drink on a summer day.

Angus
The heat dashed on me like a bomb was exploding on my back. I saw the water. I was dying to get in the water. I heard the megaphone yell out "if you have got a one on your hand please line up here". I did not go in number one. Finally it called out number four. I got in. I was muttering "I am speed" to myself.

Cheralyn
I saw the hot sun's reflection on the shimmering water. I felt the freezing water in my first race. I heard peopl shouting forother people. they were noisy and loud and all the noise gave me a headache.

Jayden
It was ahot day and the sun was burning hot. I wanted to go for a drink. Then I was happy because I had a chance to get in the water. It was as cold as a bottle of freezing cold ice. I went in three races. It was amazing. Everyone was having fun and so was I.

Welcome to Room 14

Welcome to Room 14 and the middle school. I hope you are going to have a good year in 2008. I look forward to getting to know you all. It will be nice to catch up with those of you who I got to know a little when you started school in Room 5 in 2005.

I have been in during the holidays to arrange our new classroom and I hope it works well for you. If you have any ideas of your own do tell me about them.

Keep your eyes on this page for updates which will appear throughout the year. These will give your family a good look at some of the fun activities that we get up to.
